Cat Ba Express: A Practical Guide to the Hanoi–Cat Ba Bus and Return Journey
The journey to Cat Ba begins before you reach the sea. Booking the road journey, water crossing and island transfer together can turn a complicated travel day into one connected trip.
Leaving Hanoi, you travel towards Hai Phong, cross the water to the island and continue by road to Cat Ba Town. Cat Ba Express offers several versions of this journey, including bus-and-speedboat transfers, a cable-car option and a limousine service. The most useful choice is the one that matches your departure time, seating preference and preferred crossing—not simply the ticket with the word “luxury” attached.
Departure Times and Journey Duration
Cat Ba Express publishes the following departures on its English route pages:
| Direction | Published departure times |
|---|---|
| Hanoi → Cat Ba | 06:00, 07:45, 10:45, 14:00 |
| Cat Ba → Hanoi | 09:30, 12:30, 15:30, 17:00 |
The advertised journey takes approximately 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes. Pickup arrangements can add time. The Vietnamese homepage lists the first return departure as 09:15, while the English product page shows 09:30; use the time confirmed on your booking.
For an overnight island stay, an early outbound departure leaves more of your first day available. If you prefer breakfast in Hanoi before leaving, a mid-morning service may fit better. On the return journey, choose your bus around your next commitment rather than the latest possible departure.
What Happens During the Journey?
The standard speedboat itinerary has three stages: a mainland bus journey, a short water crossing and a connecting bus on Cat Ba.
The published itinerary follows Highway 5B towards Hai Phong, includes a short rest stop and then transfers passengers to a speedboat. Once on the island, another vehicle continues towards town. Old Quarter hotel pickup is offered; the listed Hanoi meeting office is 214 Tran Quang Khai, with passengers using the office asked to arrive 20 minutes early.
Pack with the transfer in mind. Keep your phone, booking confirmation and valuables in a small day bag, and make your main luggage easy to identify. Before leaving each vehicle, check your seat pocket and overhead space.
The crossing also breaks up the road journey. Rather than treating it as an interruption, allow time to follow the boarding instructions and enjoy the change from city streets to open water.

Ticket Prices and What You Are Paying For
Cat Ba Beyond currently offers the standard journey at 350,000 VND one way and 650,000 VND return. Confirm the final amount for your chosen service before paying.
The return product lists an English-speaking guide, drinking water and wet wipes. It distinguishes bus services using a speedboat or cable car from the limousine option using a ferry. It also notes a holiday surcharge. Check the crossing attached to your fare before payment.
Returning to Hanoi
The Cat Ba departure office is listed at 191, 1/4 Street, with pickup also offered in the town centre. The return itinerary ends at the Hanoi office or an Old Quarter hotel covered by the service.
If you are joining a cruise before departure, check its actual return-to-pier time and leave room to collect your luggage. A cruise ending shortly before the bus leaves is a fragile connection.
For an onward flight, arrange the airport leg separately unless it is explicitly included. Do not treat arrival in Hanoi’s Old Quarter as arrival at the airport.
Before paying, obtain the cancellation terms, luggage allowance and child-ticket rules for your booking. Those details are particularly useful if your island plans are still flexible.
