How Do You Travel from Noi Bai Airport to Cat Ba?
Traveling from Nội Bài International Airport to Cát Bà is straightforward once you understand that the journey has two parts: a road transfer toward Hải Phòng and a sea crossing onto Cát Bà Island.
The two most practical options are:
- A private taxi or pre-booked car directly from the airport
- An airport transfer into central Hanoi followed by a scheduled Cát Bà bus
A private vehicle is faster and more convenient, while the bus combination costs less and is usually better for solo travelers with flexible schedules.
Quick comparison
| Option | Estimated total time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Private taxi or car | 3.5–4 hours | Families, groups and heavy luggage |
| Airport transfer + Cát Bà bus | 4.5–6 hours | Solo and budget travelers |
| Direct airport bus when available | About 4.5–5 hours | Travelers whose flights match the schedule |
| Late-arrival private transfer | Varies by crossing | Travelers with advance arrangements |
| Overnight in Hanoi + morning bus | Following morning | Late flights and relaxed itineraries |
Travel times are estimates. Traffic, ferry queues, weather and seasonal demand can make the journey longer.
Option 1: Private taxi or car from Nội Bài
The easiest way to reach Cát Bà is to reserve a private car before your flight. The driver meets you at the arrivals terminal and travels directly toward Hải Phòng without taking you into central Hanoi first.
The usual route is:
Nội Bài Airport → Hà Nội–Hải Phòng Expressway → Tân Vũ–Lạch Huyện Bridge → Đồng Bài Ferry Terminal → Cái Viềng → Cát Bà Town
Under normal conditions, allow approximately 3.5–4 hours door to door. This is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed arrival time.
What happens at the ferry?
Cát Bà does not have a continuous road bridge connecting it with the mainland. Your transfer therefore needs to cross from Đồng Bài on Cát Hải to Cái Viềng on Cát Bà Island.
Private services normally use one of two arrangements:
- The same vehicle boards the ferry: Your luggage remains in the car, but the vehicle may wait longer for boarding.
- A two-car relay: The first driver takes you to Đồng Bài, you cross as a passenger, and a second driver meets you at Cái Viềng.
The relay arrangement can be faster during busy periods because passenger boarding is sometimes easier than taking a vehicle across. However, you will need to move your luggage between vehicles. Ask the operator which arrangement is included before confirming your booking.

Why choose a private transfer?
A private taxi or car costs more than traveling by bus, but the higher price provides flight-timed pickup, no transfer into central Hanoi, ferry coordination, easier luggage handling, flexible rest stops, hotel drop-off, more space for children or older travelers and better support if your flight is delayed.
The cost can become more reasonable when three or four passengers share one vehicle. A private transfer is particularly useful when you land in the afternoon and need to reach the island before regular ferry operations finish.
What should the private-car price include?
Do not compare providers by the headline price alone. Confirm whether the quotation includes:
- Airport parking and expressway tolls
- Ferry or passenger-boat tickets
- Both mainland and island vehicles
- Hotel drop-off and luggage
- Driver waiting time and flight-delay monitoring
- A child seat, if required
- Any late-arrival supplement
Some companies advertise an “airport to Cát Bà” price but provide transport only to the ferry terminal. Ask for the complete door-to-door cost in writing.
Should you take an airport taxi without booking?
Official taxis are available at Nội Bài, but arranging a long island transfer after landing can be difficult. The driver must understand the ferry connection and be willing to travel a considerable distance. A city taxi may quote only the road journey or may not include ferry coordination. Reserve a long-distance transfer through a reliable company and provide your flight number, hotel and contact details beforehand.
Nội Bài Airport’s official transportation page describes regulated taxi services and lists public-transport information.

Option 2: Airport transfer and scheduled Cát Bà bus
The cheaper option is to travel from Nội Bài Airport into central Hanoi and join a scheduled combination bus from the Old Quarter to Cát Bà.
- Travel from Nội Bài Airport to Hanoi Old Quarter.
- Reach the bus company’s office or pickup point.
- Take the bus toward Hải Phòng and Cát Hải.
- Cross by ferry or passenger boat.
- Continue by bus to Cát Bà Town.
Most combination tickets include the mainland bus, sea crossing and island transfer. Nevertheless, always check what is included before paying.
Getting from Nội Bài to the Old Quarter
You can use a taxi, ride-hailing service, private airport car or public bus.
Airport Bus 86
Bus 86 connects Nội Bài Airport with central Hanoi and Hanoi Railway Station. According to the airport’s current English-language information, it operates from 07:00 until 22:15 and costs VND 50,000 per journey. Schedules and fares may change, so verify them before traveling.
Allow approximately 50–70 minutes, depending on traffic and your chosen stop. You may then need to walk or take a short taxi ride to the Cát Bà bus office. Bus 86 is inexpensive, but it is not ideal if you have several suitcases or only a small connection window.
Taxi or ride-hailing car into Hanoi
A taxi or app-based car is easier with luggage and can drop you directly at the bus company’s office. The journey usually takes around 40–60 minutes, but traffic can make it longer. Tell the driver the exact company address rather than asking vaguely for “the Cát Bà bus.”

Taking the bus from Hanoi to Cát Bà
Several companies operate scheduled buses from central Hanoi to Cát Bà, normally in the morning and early afternoon. For example, Cat Ba Express currently lists departures at 06:00, 07:45, 10:45 and 14:00. These times can change, so confirm the schedule for your date.
The journey from central Hanoi normally takes approximately 3–4 hours, including the sea crossing and onward transport to Cát Bà Town. With the airport-to-city connection and waiting time, allow 4.5–6 hours from Nội Bài.
Is there a direct bus from Nội Bài Airport?
Some operators and booking platforms advertise selected airport pickups or through-tickets. These are less frequent than departures from the Old Quarter. Do not assume every “Hanoi–Cát Bà” bus stops at the airport.
Before booking, confirm the terminal and meeting point, whether pickup is at Terminal 1 or 2, departure time, delay policy, crossing tickets and final drop-off. If the schedule fits your flight, an airport pickup removes the city transfer. Otherwise, the Old Quarter connection is usually more reliable.
Which option is cheaper?
An airport bus plus a scheduled Cát Bà bus is usually the least expensive convenient option. Your budget should also allow for a short taxi if the pickup point is not near your airport-bus stop.
- Solo travelers: The bus usually offers much better value.
- Couples: The bus remains cheaper, but a private car may help with a tight schedule.
- Families and groups: Sharing a private car reduces the difference per person.
- Travelers with children or heavy luggage: Convenience may matter more than the lowest fare.
What if your flight arrives late?
Late arrival is the most important planning issue. The Đồng Bài–Cái Viềng ferry schedule effective September–December 2026 generally operates from 05:00 to 18:00, with a possible extension to 19:00 depending on weather and demand. Sailings are generally about 30–40 minutes apart. Confirm the latest schedule before departure.
If baggage collection and road travel prevent you reaching the last regular ferry, consider a pre-arranged speedboat, an overnight stay in Hanoi, an airport-area hotel or an overnight stop in Hải Phòng. A speedboat connection must be confirmed in advance; do not assume a boat will be waiting after regular ferry hours.
What if your flight is delayed?
A scheduled bus will not always wait for a late flight. If your connection is tight, ask about the missed-departure policy before booking. A private driver can normally monitor the flight number and adjust pickup, but a long delay may still cause you to miss the final sea crossing.
Send your airline and flight number, scheduled landing time, arrival terminal, number of passengers and bags, hotel name, messaging contact and any children’s or mobility needs to the transfer company.
How much connection time should you allow?
Allow time for immigration, luggage collection, airport transport and traffic. For a domestic flight, try to leave at least 2.5–3 hours between scheduled landing and the Cát Bà bus departure. International passengers should consider a longer window. If the connection is too tight, choose a later bus or private transfer.
Will the bus take you to your hotel?
Many combination buses finish in central Cát Bà Town. Some include selected hotel drop-offs; others use an office or designated stop. Remote resorts, villages or floating homestays may require a separate taxi, hotel transport, motorbike taxi or local boat. Send your exact accommodation name before booking: “Cát Bà” can mean the town, island or wider archipelago.

Private taxi or bus: which should you choose?
Choose a private taxi or car for a family or group, heavy luggage, afternoon arrival, hotel-to-hotel service, children or older relatives, or when time and convenience outweigh price.
Choose the bus combination if you travel alone or as a couple, want to reduce costs, land early enough, can reach the Old Quarter in time, can carry your luggage and have a flexible itinerary. The right choice depends on group size, flight time, budget and tolerance for transfers.
Recommended planning strategy
- Check your scheduled landing time.
- Add time for immigration and baggage collection.
- Compare that time with Cát Bà bus departures.
- Check the ferry schedule for your travel date.
- Confirm whether your ticket includes every transfer.
- Avoid an extremely tight connection.
- Keep the operator’s contact details available.
- Carry some Vietnamese currency for small transport costs.
- Share your hotel address with the driver.
- Prepare an overnight alternative for major delays.
The practical answer
The fastest and easiest route from Nội Bài to Cát Bà is a pre-booked private taxi or car, taking approximately 3.5–4 hours under normal conditions. It costs more, but provides airport pickup, easier luggage handling and coordinated transport to your hotel.
The cheaper route is to take Bus 86 or a taxi into central Hanoi, then a scheduled combination bus. Including transfers and waiting time, allow approximately 4.5–6 hours. Confirm the sea crossing, final drop-off and late-arrival policy before traveling.
