How Long Does It Take from Cat Bi Airport to Cat Ba?
Cát Bi International Airport is the closest airport to Cát Bà Island. Under normal conditions, a properly coordinated transfer from the arrivals terminal to a hotel in Cát Bà Town takes approximately 1.5–2 hours.
The distance is not the only factor. Cát Bà is an island, so the journey includes a road transfer, a sea crossing and another drive to your accommodation. Waiting for the ferry or changing vehicles can make the trip longer, especially during busy weekends and summer holidays.
Quick travel-time overview
| Transfer option | Estimated duration | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Private airport transfer | 1.5–2 hours | Families, groups, heavy luggage |
| Shared shuttle or combined transfer | 2–3 hours | Solo travellers and couples |
| Taxi + ferry + local transport | 2.5–3.5 hours | Independent travellers |
| Public transport with connections | 3–4 hours or longer | Travellers prioritising cost |
| Private car from Nội Bài Airport | 4–4.5 hours | Groups wanting door-to-door travel |
These are planning estimates, not guaranteed arrival times. Traffic, weather, ferry operations and your hotel’s location can all affect the journey.

What route will you follow?
Most daytime transfers follow Cát Bi Airport → Tân Vũ–Lạch Huyện Bridge → Cát Hải → Đồng Bài Ferry Terminal → Cái Viềng → Cát Bà Town.
The first road section crosses the sea bridge to Cát Hải Island and continues to Đồng Bài. After crossing to Cái Viềng, travellers still have approximately 25 kilometres of island road to reach Cát Bà Town, through limestone hills and villages.
How long does each section take?
- Airport pickup and departure: 10–20 minutes
- Cát Bi to Đồng Bài: approximately 35–50 minutes
- Waiting and ferry crossing: approximately 30–60 minutes
- Cái Viềng to Cát Bà Town: approximately 35–45 minutes
These ranges add up to roughly two hours or more. A particularly smooth connection may be faster, while narrowly missing a ferry can extend the trip.

The ferry is short, but waiting time matters
The crossing itself is relatively short; the unpredictable part is waiting to board. Hải Phòng’s official schedule effective from September 2026 lists daytime Đồng Bài–Cái Viềng services through the end of 2026. Confirm the current final departure before travel because schedules, weather and operations can change.
Summer weekends, holidays, vehicle queues, poor visibility, operational adjustments and arriving just after a sailing can all increase waiting time. Foot passengers using separate vehicles on each side may sometimes cross more efficiently than a car waiting for a vehicle space.
What happens during a coordinated transfer?
Some services use a relay: one driver meets you at Cát Bi and takes you to Đồng Bài, you cross as a passenger, and another vehicle meets you at Cái Viềng. This may save time in the vehicle queue but requires moving luggage. Other services take the same vehicle across, which keeps bags in the car but may mean a longer wait.
Before booking, ask whether the offer includes one vehicle throughout, a two-vehicle relay, a car-and-speedboat combination, or only a ride to the mainland terminal. Confirm that the fare is fully door-to-door to your hotel.

Is a shared shuttle a good option?
A shared shuttle often balances cost and convenience for solo travellers or couples. Allow around 2–3 hours, depending on its timetable and pickup stops. Because shared vehicles may not wait for a delayed flight, ask where pickup happens, how long the driver waits, whether crossing tickets are included, where the island drop-off is, the luggage allowance and the flight-delay policy.
Can you travel independently?
Yes. A taxi or ride-hailing car can take you toward the crossing; then you buy a ferry ticket and arrange onward transport from Cái Viềng. This requires coordinating each stage yourself and is less convenient with large bags or children. Public-bus connections are possible but are not one simple airport-to-hotel service. For example, Hải Phòng’s route 16B serves Cát Bi Airport but runs toward Phà Rừng, not directly to Cát Bà Town. Budget travellers should allow at least 3–4 hours and avoid tight connections.
Why does a private car cost more?
A dedicated transfer pays for airport pickup, flexible timing, luggage help and coordination across the sea connection. A driver can monitor a flight and adjust for a reasonable delay. This is especially useful for families, groups sharing the vehicle cost, older passengers, heavy luggage, stays outside central town and arrivals near the last regular crossing. It cannot eliminate ferry queues or bad weather.

What if your flight arrives late?
Regular ferries do not operate all night. Passport control, baggage collection or a delayed flight may make the last crossing impossible. A speedboat solution may be available by prior arrangement, at a higher cost and subject to conditions; otherwise an overnight stay in Hải Phòng may be necessary. Do not assume a taxi can drive all the way to Cát Bà at any hour.
Send the operator your flight number, scheduled arrival, terminal, passenger and luggage counts, hotel address and a working contact number so they can assess the practical connection.
How much extra time should you allow in summer?
On a normal weekday, 1.5–2 hours is a useful private-transfer planning estimate. For summer weekends, public holidays or unusually busy days, allow 2.5–3 hours or more. The queue before boarding often causes more delay than the crossing. If a cruise or tour has a firm departure, plan around the higher estimate.
How long does it take from Nội Bài Airport?
Nội Bài is much farther away. A private car usually follows the Hà Nội–Hải Phòng Expressway; allow approximately 4–4.5 hours door to door in normal conditions, with additional time for congestion, rest stops and ferry waits. A shared journey via central Hà Nội can take longer. A private car costs more but avoids a separate transfer into the city and may make sense when several people share it.
Which airport should you choose?
If suitable flights are available, Cát Bi is the more convenient airport for Cát Bà. Choose it when the island is your first northern Vietnam destination, you want less road travel or you are travelling with children or older relatives. Nội Bài remains practical for better international connections or when Hà Nội is part of your itinerary.
Practical booking checklist
- Is the quote door-to-door?
- Are ferry or speedboat tickets included?
- Will I change vehicles?
- Does the driver monitor flight delays?
- Is the price per person or per vehicle?
- Are tolls, waiting time and luggage included?
- What happens if the last ferry is missed?
- Is drop-off at my hotel or only in town?
- Is a child seat available if needed?
- What is the cancellation policy after a flight change?
The realistic answer
Plan for 1.5–2 hours from Cát Bi by a coordinated private transfer and 2–3 hours by shared or independently arranged transport. Add time for holidays, weather, queues and late arrivals. Private transport costs more, but simplifies pickup, luggage handling and connections.
