Why Do Two Lan Ha Bay Tours Have Very Different Prices?
Two Lan Ha Bay tours can show nearly identical photographs yet have very different prices. One might be a large shared boat with a standard route and simple lunch; another might offer a small group, a more comfortable vessel, private transfer or a higher staff-to-guest ratio.
The destination alone does not determine the price. What matters is how you travel, how long you spend on the bay and what is included.
1. Shared boat, small group or private charter
Group size is one of the largest cost differences. A large shared boat divides fuel, crew, guide and harbour costs among more passengers, usually lowering the per-person price. The timetable must work for everyone, though, so boarding, kayaking and meals can take longer.
On a small-group tour, fewer guests share those operating costs. You may gain more attention, quicker transitions and a quieter atmosphere. With a private charter, your party pays for the vessel rather than individual seats. It can be costly for two people but more reasonable per person for a family or group. Departure times and stops may be flexible, always subject to weather and harbour rules.

2. Tour duration is not always time on the water
“Full day” does not guarantee the same cruising time. One operator may count hotel pickup, transfers and collecting passengers; another may spend longer on the bay. Ask for an hour-by-hour plan and compare:
- Hotel pickup and drop-off
- Boarding and harbour departure
- Kayaking and swimming time
- Lunch duration
- Time spent collecting passengers
- Return-to-harbour time
A cheaper tour may still be good value, but the actual time on the water is the useful comparison.
3. The vessel changes the operating cost
Boats differ in age, size, comfort and equipment. A traditional wooden day boat with a simple dining area does not have the same costs as a modern vessel with air-conditioning, spacious decks and premium seating.
- Space per passenger and shaded or air-conditioned areas
- Bathrooms, changing areas and onboard showers
- Sundecks, swimming platforms and newer kayaks
- Maintenance, safety equipment, crew training and staffing
Request recent photos of the spaces passengers actually use, not only the boat exterior.
4. Routes and activities are not identical
“Lan Ha Bay tour” is not a standardised itinerary. One boat might stay near the harbour; another may travel farther to lagoons, beaches or kayaking areas. Longer routes use more fuel. Smaller vessels or different departure times can create a less crowded experience.
Some trips include one short paddle; others give more time to kayaking, swimming or cycling. Compare the planned stops and time at each one. Weather, tides and local operating rules may still change the route on the day.

5. Overnight cabin quality creates a large price gap
On an overnight cruise, the cabin can account for much of the difference. A compact lower-deck room with a small window is not equivalent to a larger cabin with panoramic glass, a balcony or an upgraded bathroom.
Confirm the exact category, floor area, deck, window or balcony, private bathroom, air-conditioning, bed layout, occupancy, single supplement and extra-bed policy. Also check whether meals, entrance fees, activities, insurance, taxes, transfers, drinks and spa services are included or excluded.
6. Food ranges from practical to premium
A budget day trip may offer a shared Vietnamese set lunch. A more expensive boat may serve a buffet, seafood-focused menu, dietary alternatives or several meals during an overnight stay.
- Which meals and how many are included
- Drinking water, tea, coffee, soft drinks and alcohol
- Vegetarian choices and allergy arrangements
- Shared or private dining and holiday surcharges
“Meals included” does not automatically include beverages or tell you the portion size and menu quality.
7. Transfers may or may not be included
A trip starting in Cat Ba Town should not be compared directly with a package that includes round-trip transport from Hanoi. Transfers may cover expressway travel, a ferry or speedboat, luggage handling and hotel pickup. Vehicle standards also vary.
Confirm the precise starting point and which hotels or areas qualify for pickup.
8. Entrance fees and activities can be hidden extras
Some operators include sightseeing tickets and kayaking in the displayed price; others charge separately. A private-charter quote may cover only the vessel, with entrance fees, meals or a guide added later. Ask for a written breakdown of:
- Bay entrance and sightseeing tickets
- Kayak or bamboo-boat fees
- Meals and drinks
- Guide and transfers
- Insurance, VAT and service charges
- Weekend or holiday surcharges
- Tips and personal expenses
The meaningful comparison is the final payable total, not the headline rate.
9. Guides, staff and service standards matter
A low-cost boat may have a capable crew but no dedicated English-speaking guide. Another trip may include briefings, local context and help throughout the activities. Private tours sometimes price a guide separately.
More crew members, individual attention and staff training can affect the experience even when promotional photos look similar.
10. Season and booking conditions affect the rate
Weekend, holiday and summer demand can raise prices. Overnight cruises may apply festive surcharges, while a flexible cancellation option may cost more than a non-refundable booking.
Check the bad-weather policy, cancellation deadline, refund method and any amount due later—not just today’s deposit.
How should you compare two tours?
Put the offers side by side and ask the same questions of each operator:
| Compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Vessel | What is its name, age and passenger capacity? |
| Duration | How many hours are actually spent cruising? |
| Route | Which areas and activities are planned? |
| Group | Shared, small-group or private? |
| Cabin | Which exact category and deck? |
| Food | Which meals and drinks are included? |
| Transfers | Does the price begin in Cat Ba, Hanoi or elsewhere? |
| Fees | Are tickets, kayaking, VAT and surcharges included? |
| Service | Is an English-speaking guide provided? |
| Conditions | What happens after cancellation or bad weather? |
The most expensive tour is not automatically best, and the cheapest is not automatically poor. A social traveller may enjoy a lively shared boat; a family may value space and flexibility. Begin with “What exactly will I receive?” Once inclusions, vessel, route and group size are clear, the price difference usually makes sense.
