Understand the connection
A through-ticket may include a bus to the Hai Phong coast, a ferry or other authorised water crossing and onward transport to Cat Ba Town. Ask whether you stay with the same operator, change vehicles and carry your luggage between stages.
Confirm the real pickup
Hanoi pickup zones differ between operators. Get the exact address, pickup window, arrival point on Cat Ba and the contact number in writing; a listing that says only “Hanoi hotel pickup” is not enough.
Leave room for delays
Ferry queues, weather and traffic can stretch the journey, particularly around holidays. Avoid connecting straight to a fixed boat departure unless the tour operator has explicitly confirmed enough time.
